A New Name for the Game

Why I renamed the game to Settlement 2x86 as it started to feel like something that could grow beyond a proof of concept.

Looking back: Origins to October 21, 2026

I renamed the game to Settlement 2x86 today.

I’m a bit disappointed that I didn’t settle the name out of the gate. Honestly, I did consider it. I’ve played all three Wasteland games, and I’m a fan of the series. I knew the name was already out there. I just didn’t think this project would get much further than a proof of concept.

That started to change when I began to believe this could become an actual game. Something that could grow beyond the prototype or even a single chapter. The longer I kept the name, the more of a headache changing it would become.

Don’t get me wrong. A cease-and-desist from Microsoft would be an honor. I’d probably hang it on the wall. But I don’t need the heat and legal problems that come with it.

I still like Wasteland as a name. It just isn’t mine.

I considered other names and narrowed it down to Settlement and Outpost. The 2x86 part was non-negotiable. I like the reference to Intel’s x86 architecture, and I wanted to keep it.

I landed on Settlement 2x86 because it highlights the opening area. The settlement is where this story begins, and it could grow into a larger story that would be interesting to watch unfold.
